WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In January of 2024, The Peoples Church congregation voted overwhelmingly to launch a capital campaign to raise money for essential repairs and upgrades inside of our aging church building. Since then, plans have been moving forward for three sequential phases of renovation along with an outreach program that will benefit the larger community while we upgrade our facility. The capital campaign has a fundraising goal of $4 million. Here is a snapshot of what the plans entail:
Phase I: Renovation of the Social Hall and new air handlers for the Sanctuary. This phase addresses the Social Hall’s need for a safe and accessible stage, a new HVAC system, new lighting, new audio/visual capacities for a variety of services, and a welcoming and functional venue for both church events and community groups. New air handlers for the Sanctuary are also planned for this phase. Competitive bidding in late 2024 resulted in the selection of Wieland construction company as the general contractor for Phase 1.
Concurrent with Phase I: Impactful Community Outreach Project. The church has partnered with Lansing Intentional Communities (LINCS) and Habitat for Humanity Capital Region to renovate a house in Lansing for people on the autism spectrum to live independently while creating community connections. You can support this outreach by contributing financially or by volunteering your time. To indicate your interest in volunteering, click here.
Phase II: Sanctuary Modernization. This phase addresses the need for a safer, more accessible and extended chancel that allows for wider steps, an integrated ramp, a safer and integrated choir loft, and realigned pews that are more accessible and comfortable.
Phase III: Renovating and Revoicing the Pipe Organ. This phase will address many age-related problems we’ve had with our pipe organ in recent years. The goal is to restore it to full function, provide a more ergonomic console for the organist, and assure many more years of reliable service. R.T. Swanson, Inc. has been selected as the general contractor for Phase III.

SOCIAL HALL PROGRESS |
SOCIAL HALL PROGRESS |
Social Hall renovations are scheduled to be completed at the end of 2025. This progress shot from mid-September shows how all columns have been wrapped in oak paneling and wired for decorative down-lighting. The same oak paneling was applied to two “wing walls” on either side of the stage, creating a coordinated look. Construction work still to come: installing the drop ceiling; painting walls; electrical wiring; continued work on the stage; and installation of cabinetry, audio-video equipment, lighting, and flooring.
