The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota is among the poorest counties in the nation. Unemployment hovers between 80 and 90 percent, with a per person annual income of about $4,000. Suicide, alcoholism, and infant mortality give Pine Ridge the lowest life expectancy rate in the country. Re-Member was formed in 1997 to work with the Lakota people to improve living conditions on the reservation by creating more affordable and adequate housing. The Peoples Church has worked with Re-Member for more than a decade, regularly sending volunteers to help build bunk beds, repair homes, and to be immersed in the Lakota culture.
